You didn't say anything wrong. You actually did the right thing by being honest with him. But sometimes that happened, I guess he just didn't expect that from you. The best thing to do is to let him realize it by himself. And when he does found out, just be there for him and next time he will know to listen to you and it would probably never happen again.
