How to protect a delicate applique/patch?

I have a applique/patch that's made of tiny beads that I want to put on my jacket. Is there any way for me to secure the beads so it can survive a washing machine? I'm thinking of painting it over with clear fabric paint or even sewing plastic over it, but I'm not sure it will work.
