Would you sell off family heirlooms...?

Some of those Antique selling shows amaze me, as to how anyone could sell of great grandpa's pure gold pocket watch to fund a birthday party! Now if the family were living in dire straits and needed the cash to survive i could see the point, but a party to me just isnt on.
