Can dogs eat apples or anything of that sort?

So, the dog that my family owns loves to chew everything up, you name it, couches, plastic bottles. As a result of that, all of his toys are destroyed and completely useless. Today, I threw him an apple, just because he looked bored. He began chewing and gnawing at it. So, I was just wondering, can dogs eat apples? Is it good or bad for them? Thanks!
